The mourning and the evening ended the first day

Early in the evening of the first day of this week, the flags were raised from half to full mast.  The reflection and the reverence,  the breath-holding and the introspection faded with the daylight.

By the time the hour hand reached midnight on May 2, the headlines were rolling on out:
