Why oppose ‘Palestine?’

There is universal consensus at a governmental level that the biblical and historical Land of Israel should be divided into two states, a state of Israel and a state of Palestine. According to these expectations, the borders of Israel should, more or less, fall along the ceasefire lines agreed to after the 1948 war for the independence of the Jewish state. These boundaries are more commonly referred to as Israel’s pre-1967 borders.

Samaria, Judea – together with so-called eastern Jerusalem, which includes the Old City with its Temple Mount– and the Gaza Strip lie outside these lines. These areas, then, should comprise a new state called Palestine, which should be created as a homeland for the Arabs who are today known globally as the “Palestinians.”

As world leaders would have it – at the forefront standing the United States, France, Germany, England and Russia – the establishment of these two states on this one small piece of land offers the best chance of securing an end to the decades’-long conflict between Arabs and Jews in the Middle East. Finally securing such a pact would make for a more stable and more secure world.

Different names, same goal

Thus are the names attached to this plan: the “PEACE process,” “the Two-State SOLUTION” and “the Road Map to Peace.” By default, opposition to this plan in any of its versions is branded opposition to peace itself. That is to say, those who reject the “Two State Solution” are warmongers and enemies of peace – by definition. What loathsome foes of humankind such people must be!

Of course, this is blatant bullying. It can be effectively intimidating to scream terrible accusations at someone who disagrees with you, literally blasting them into silence.

And indeed, having bludgeoned or otherwise overwhelmed most opposition into silence, the international community is forging ahead towards the realization of its design on this land.

Right now, Israel is at a place of unprecedented international isolation

The Goldstone Report seeks to turn the Jewish state into an indictable war criminal, whittling away at what little standing this nation has left in the world. The Obama administration has come fully into line with, and now leads, the implementation of the international community’s blueprint for the division of the land. Europe has just ratified the Lisbon Treaty that will see the appointment of a new President of the European Council who would be almost on a political power par with the president of the United States. It was to Europe that the PLO appealed this week for recognition if it moved unilaterally to declare Palestinian statehood. (The EU turned them down, but is likely to approve the next time.)

Iran races unhampered towards nuclear military capability, with reports in The Guardian of London earlier this month suggesting Iranian scientists have experimented with an advanced nuclear warhead design. Meanwhile – a’la Hitler’s Brown Shirts – the mullahs ad their thugs continue to crush popular dissent on Iranian city streets, while the US and other western nations make insipid little sounds and look the other way…

In the face of this almost total onslaught, Israel stands alone. Even the voices of its Christian friends appear muted, ineffectual, pathetic.
